I like to imagine that, after their initial “lessons”, the Teachers actually don’t really bother the Students all that much? Most of them aren’t really around all that much, and the ones who live at the house with them are usually more concerned with doing their own things. Or with each other, in the case of Paige and Tony. 

Not that the Students aren’t still uneasy, but who can blame them when they basically have four demi-gods (or maybe even full on deities) living with them more often than not?

headcanons on the main trios names!!!

(note: I know they're not suppose to have names but? it was stuck in my head for a while now)

Red Guy - John Smith

• in my personal headcanon, the red people are initially very boring creatures who live under the "dystopian-utopia" system, where everyone is quite literally the same, from the voice tone to the mannerisms. and while this means that inside the "tribe" there is basically no discrimination or violence (because there wouldn't be a reason for such acts if everyone were just copies of one another), this also completely removes the individuality of each red being, to the point were every male is named john smith and every female is mary smith.

• but because red guy is the odd one, he would normally not like his own name and instead refer to himself as something more fun and creative. at one point he told yellow and duck his name, but these two couldn't properly remember it (yellow because of the dying batteries and duck because he feels like there's no need to keep in mind such unnecessary detail since "we're a family, who cares?") and eventually yellow just starts calling him "JJ". which red guy doesn't mind, as long as he isn't just "that big one".

Duck - Frederick Du Morganser

• somewhat, I always felt like if this guy would have a name, it would be one of those stupidly long ones that don't even make sense. but I actually put some sense into this one.

• first of all, don't ask me why frederick of all names, because I don't really have a coherent answer for that. I just think he looks like he would be frederick? like... in theory, it's a very noble name, but a very goofy one at the same time, especially since the shorten version of it is fred. imagine duck with a name fred. how fucking humorous.

• the prefix du is here purely because he's a duck. just without the "ck" part.

• as for morganser... now, I wasn't quite sure what kind of surname would fit this guy, but I googled some duck species and found one named merganser. and an image pop up into my mind. I feel like in this version duck would have named morgan after his own surname because of course he would.

• oh and other two don't care that much for his name. it's too many symbols for yellow's brain and red guy just doesn't feel like actually calling him that. they do sometimes mock him by calling him freddie (not fazbear) though.

Yellow Guy - William Dennis Gribbleston

• out of all the fan-made names for yellow guy I feel like dennis is the most fitting (shocking, considering I grew up with the classic fanon names). I don't know why, but when I look at yellow, I could definitely see him as a dennis rather than doi, david or even manny. perhaps it's just because of the fact that this name rhymes with tennis, which makes it ten times funnier and cute, somehow? (god I need fanart of yellow guy playing tennis please)

• william is here NOT for the fnaf reference!!! it's for the nickname, in yellow's case it's billy. billy in general sounds like a very child-like nickname (for me, personally) and I believe it fits! in the contrast with his surname I think it looks quite silly.

• I feel like yellow guy would tell the other two his name, but it would be like.. so briefly mentioned the two would simply miss it. like "yeah and then the guy asked me for my name and- and I said it and he uh.. was like oh uh- nice to see you william dennis and then I was like-" and the entire time neither red guy or duck are even listening at this point. sad.

This is probably the closest to my personal interpretation of how they usually are with Yellow/Dennis, at least when they’re both completely free to do what they want. I don’t know why, but I always love the idea of them actually being surprisingly civil and even sometimes nice to the main characters, and them having this sort of Aunt/Uncle dynamic with the youngest member of the trio is a fun idea.

Ok ok hear me out: a padlock fic where Paige and Tony are just Yellow's Cool Aunt and Uncle.

One day he's all upset because "I wanted to dye my hair pink, but Duck won't let me :(" and Paige steps out of the void, still menacing as ever, "Oh, is that so? Well, I think I can help with that! :) You said you wanted pink, right? :)"

Tony offers to pick him up from school and buys him ice cream before they get home, if he promises not to tell or else they're both in trouble. They usually also have to buy Paige's silence, but it's totally worth it.

I just think it'd be nice,,

"red" is a nickname but idk what his real name is. either way literally nobody calls him his real name except when the inevitable Parallel To Seeing The Other Red People In Canon happens and his family exclusively calls him his real name because they hate him. that Is how his housemates find out what his name is btw. it's a comedic thing where he's like "you two will NEVER know my real name" and then his mom or something sees him and is like "(real name)? is that you? it's been so long". maybe it's something pretentious and extremely unfitting for him. like roderick. i'll go with that it's funny

birdman... i was thinking Douglas? because it's a little silly and it's easily shortened down to Duck as a funny joking nickname that his friends call him Occasionally. but it might be too close in sound to dennis and get confusing. i also have Drake bc a drake is a male duck and it's less similar to dennis. so i'll go with that. he Would name himself something way too cool for him

what if i made the latter two's surnames inspired by the fanon names actually. harris and robinson. i like that. i don't wanna do that for dennis bc i like the "g" surname as a sidelong reference to gribbleston but i like it for the other two.

As you can probably tell from my headcanon for Lesley’s surname, I do have Lesley being Dennis/Yellow Guy’s mother in my stories, but I don’t give him the name that most people tend to give Lesley’s son (David). That’s because in my stories, there is...or, more accurately was, a David. He’s my world’s version of the Shy Imaginary Older Brother. Only here, he’s not so much actually imaginary as much as Dennis’s memory of him is so faint that he doesn’t actually remember he was a real person, since David died when Dennis was only about three years old, just starting to develop long term memory, and out of grief, neither Roy or Lesley really talked much about David, especially around Dennis.

One thing I have to admit is that my interpretations/headcanons for some stuff from Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared are different from what most of the fandom tends to use? It’s not a case of me thinking my ideas are “better”, it’s just the way I interpreted the stuff after watching the web series for the first time.

First off, the names I give the main characters are Henry Richard (Red Guy, or Harry to most of the fandom, though I have him go by Red), Artemis/Art (Duck Guy/Robin), and Dennis (Yellow Guy/Manny). Though Dennis was something that was suggested to be by a friend years ago, not something I came up with all on my own.

But, also, the way I view the personalities of some of the Teachers, and their relationship with the Students, is fairly different from a lot of fanon? Especially when it comes to Paige/Sketchbook and Tony the Talking Clock? I do think those two have a thing for each other, and they can get on each other’s nerves a lot, and they do probably get pretty violent with each other....but I do also imagine there being a pretty decent level of genuine affection and care there, especially after they’ve been together for a while, and that for them, the violence is just part of how they show each other affection (especially when they have the “safety net” of knowing they’ll always revive within a day, so they never have to worry about permanently losing each other). 

Plus, I actually don’t really imagine they actually...do much with the main characters, at least on a regular basis? I have to admit to kind of loving (in a kind of dark way) the stories that depict them as these pretty much literal monsters who constantly put the three guys through horrible nightmares basically all the time. But, watching their respective episodes multiple times, I realize that while neither of them is a “good” person, neither of them really seems to do any major harm until the end (and with Paige, it’s kind of hard to say if she even meant for all that to happen); and with Tony, while what he did is in no way excusable, it did seem like that was just him reaching his breaking point in terms of his patience. So I more see them as just like...usually actually ignoring the three main characters, but popping in occasionally for “extra lessons”. Which, combined with their first meetings, is enough for Paige and Tony to be dreaded at the house.

Dennis Gribbleston (Yellow Guy) Headcanons

Is actually Roy’s second son, the result of an affair he had during a brief separation between Roy and Lesley. His birth mother died when he was young and she had no living family, so Roy and Lesley adopted him.

His middle name is Michael 

Since he was so young when David died, he doesn’t fully remember him, but subconsciously modeled some aspects of his own personality on what he does remember about his half-brother, as well as making up an imaginary friend to represent him

Has lived with Art and Red since he was four, and has occasionally slipped and accidentally called either of them “Dad” at least once

Can sometimes be a bit of a hypochondriac, at least when it comes to things that he knows are a sign of illness

Loved horses when he was very young, but gained a phobia of them after almost getting stepped on by one

Actually has a decent amount of friends at school but never invites anyone over for fear that they’ll stop wanting to be his friends if they learn about the Teachers

He likes to eat spaghetti, but he actually prefers to eat it plain, or at most, with a little bit of pizza sauce on it to get the taste of tomato sauce but not have to worry about the pieces of tomato or things like garlic. Used to eat dry spaghetti as a snack

Does actually consider Lily and Todney friends, though he always makes sure to avoid going to their house around dinner time

Has a tendency to sleep in either Art or Red’s beds when he’s upset, whether about something that happened that day, or just from a nightmare he had.

Genuinely considers Lesley his mom, at least subconsciously, hence why he thinks of her maiden name as his own when using it for the computer password
